Set up email on iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch

Select the type of email account you want to set up on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch:

Email accounts ending with @outlook.com, hotmail.com, msn.com, or live.com

You can set up your email account using the Outlook for iOS app available from the Apple Store or the built-in iOS mail app.

NOTE   Outlook for iOS requires iOS 8.0 or higher. App availability varies by country so find out what's available in your country. If the app is incompatible with your device, try adding your mail account using the built-in mail app that comes with your device.

  1. Download the Outlook for iOS app from the Apple Store if you haven't installed it yet.

    If you already have it installed, open it, then tap Settings> Add Account.

  2. On the Add an Account page, select Outlook.com if you have an Outlook email account ending with @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @msn.com or @live.com. This includes international domains like @outlook.co.uk or any custom domains hosted on Outlook.com.

    If you have a different email account, tap one of the other options. For example, tap iCloud if you want to add an iCloud account, or Gmail if you want to a Gmail account.

  3. On the sign in page, type your full email address, for example <someone>@outlook.com, type your password, and then tap Sign in.

    TIP   If you get a time-out message, your password or other information might be incorrect. Retype the information, and then try again.

  4. Select Yes to let the app access your info. Outlook for iOS begins syncing.

  5. Tap one of the icons to view your calendar, files, or contacts in the app.

You can also use the browser on your device to check your email account ending with @outlook.com, @hotmail,com, @msn.com, or @live.com email. Go to http://m.mail.live.com, and sign in to your email account.

Add another account
  1. You can have more than one email account in Outlook for iOS. Tap Settings > + Add Account.

  2. Go back to the top of this page and select the type of account you want to add.

Delete an account
  1. Tap Settings.

  2. Tap the account you want to delete.

  3. Select Remove Account, and then select From Deviceor From Device & Remote Data.

  1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.

  2. In the Add Account page, tapOutlook.com.

  2. Tap Office 365 if you have a work or school account in Office 365 for business.

  3. Type your full email address, for example tony@contoso.com, type your password, and then tap Sign in.

    TIP   If you get a time-out message, your password or other information might be incorrect. Retype the information, and then try again.

    NOTE   If you previously selected Exchange to set up your account you may receive a message about security upgrades and you'll need to re-sign in. Follow the prompts and sign in with your full email address and password.

  4. Select Yes to let the app access your info. Outlook for iOS begins syncing.

  5. Tap one of the icons to view your calendar, files, or contacts in the app.

Add another account

Set up IMAP or POP email accounts

Set up your email account using the Outlook for iOS app available from the Apple Store or the built-in iOS mail app.

If you're setting up an IMAP account you can use Outlook for iOS. If you want to set up a POP account, use the built-in iOS mail app that comes with your device.

  1. Download the Outlook for iOS app from the Apple Store if you haven't installed it yet.

  2. Tap IMAP.

  3. Type your full email address, for example tony@contoso.com, type your password, and then tap Sign in. Outlook for iOS begins syncing.

    TIP   If you get a time-out message, your password or other information might be incorrect. Retype the information, and then try again.

    If you still cannot connect. Tap Show advanced settings.

    Incoming Mail Server

    • Host Name Type your incoming mail server name. For example, the server name for Office 365 is outlook.office365.com.

    • User Name Type your email address, for example tony@contoso.com.

    • Password Type your password.

    • Make sure SSL is checked.

    • Port Type your Port. For example, theincoming server port for Office 365 is 993

    • Host Name Type your outgoing mail server name. For example, the outgoing server name for Office 365 is smtp.office365.com.

    • User Name Type your email address, for example tony@contoso.com.

    • Password Type your password.

    • Make sure SSL is checked.

    • Port Type your port number. For example, theoutgoing server port for Office 365 is 587.

  4. Tap Log In.

NOTE   If you're setting up an IMAP or POP account, only your email will sync to your device. Any calendar and contacts remain stored on your local computer.

  1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars >Accounts > Add account > Email.

  2. In the Add Account page, tap Other > Add Mail Account.

  3. Enter your full email address, for example tony@contoso.com, your password, and change the description if you want. Tap Next.

  4. Depending on your account, select IMAP orPOP and add the following.

    NOTE   The mail app may fill in the correct incoming and outgoing mail settings for you. If it doesn't and you don't know the necessary server settings to complete these steps, contact your email provider.

    • Incoming Mail Server

      • Host Name Type your incoming mail server name. For example, the server name for Office 365 isoutlook.office365.com.

      • User Name Type your email address, for example tony@contoso.com.

    • Host Name Type your outgoing mail server name. For example, the outgoing server name for Office 365 issmtp.office365.com.

  5. Tap Save.

  6. If you're prompted to create a passcode, tapContinue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don't set up a passcode, you can't view this account on your device. You can also set up a passcode later in your settings.

Check what type of email account you have and other troubleshooting tips

Here's a tip to check what type of email account you have

Not sure what type of account you have? Check with your email provider. Or, if you already have the email account you're trying to add set up on a PC or Mac using Outlook try this.

  1. In Outlook select File > Info > Account Settings.

  2. In the Account Settings window check the Type column to see what type of account it is.

Troubleshoot email setup on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch

If you're unable to set up email on your device try the following.

  • Double-check your username and password are typed correctly.

  • If you added incoming and outgoing server settings, double-check you typed the names correctly. If you're not sure of the settings for your email, contact your email provider.

  • Try accessing your email from another computer or device.
